What You Need to Know Before Getting Laser Hair Removal
Tired of shaving, waxing, plucking, and threading unwanted body hair with the process being time-consuming only for the hair to reappear a couple of days after? Laser hair removal is a solution to reduce hair growth or almost eliminate unwanted hair after several sessions.

However, just like with any other procedure, it is always better to research if considering Laser hair removal. This would help you in knowing what to expect before, during, and after the procedure, know if the treatment is right for you and also help you in making an informed decision. Although a professional laser hair removal therapist should guide you in the clinic, it is always best to do a little bit of research on your own.

Here is a list of things that you should know if you are considering laser hair removal:

1. Stay out of the sun before and after the treatment. About 4 weeks before your laser hair removal you should keep the treatment area out from the sun. This includes self-tanners and tanning beds. Exposing the treatment area to the sun can lead to skin discoloration, excessive pain, and blistering following the procedure. After the treatment, one should avoid the sun for 72 hours and also use sunscreen.

2. Shave the area before you laser. Although you are not supposed to wax or pluck the hair before the treatment (these two methods remove the hair by the root), it is advised to shave the area 24-48 hours before the appointment. Shaving the area decreases the risks of burns and the hair follicle (the laser targets the pigment in the hair follicle) which is left intact after shaving, will be below the skin’s surface.

3. Do not bleach. Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment of the root hairs. The hair pigment which is found in the root of the hair absorbs the light from the laser thus destroying the hair follicle and making the treatment a success. Bleaching the hair alters its pigment and makes it difficult for the laser to target. You should stop bleaching your hair at least six weeks before your laser hair removal treatment as this is ample time for the hair to grow back to its natural color.

4. It is fast treatment. The treatment session can last anywhere between 20 minutes to one hour depending on the area being treated.

5. Remove creams and makeup before the treatment. The ingredients in some beauty products can affect the results of the laser hair treatment and that is why it is important to remove any body creams or makeup that you have on before the treatment.

6. More than one treatment session is needed. Several sessions may be needed before the optimal results can be visible. The treatment sessions are scheduled for every four to six weeks depending on your hair growth cycle. This time frame is ideal for the dead hair shafts to fall off with the full results showing after about three months.

7. Laser hair removal is safe and effective. Laser hair removal treatment is a safe, effective, and long-lasting solution as it is carried out by qualified professionals who access your skin beforehand to make sure you are a good candidate for the procedure. You should however check out the qualifications of your laser hair removal therapist.
